Sapporo Buys Anchor

Print
News: August 2017

California’s Anchor Brewing Company has been acquired by Japanese brewery Sapporo.

The San Francisco brewery, famous for its Steam Beer, was founded in the nineteenth century and rescued from certain closure by businessman Fritz Maytag during the 1960s. Maytag sold the brewery to the Griffin Group, an investment firm, in 2010.

Sapporo already has North American interests, having taken over the Canadian brewery Sleeman in 2006. Anchor’s distilling business is not part of the deal.
