Beer Duty Up in Budget

Print
News: March 2017

Chancellor Philip Hammond has raised the duty payable on beer in the spring Budget.

Duty on a pint of beer will rise in line with inflation by two pence. The move has been criticised by consumer and trade groups who claim it will undermine jobs in the pubs and brewing sectors. It is the first time in five years that duty on beer has been increased.

More positively, the Chancellor also revealed a temporary £1,000 discount for most pubs, to offset swingeing rises in business rates. The largest pubs – those with a rateable value of over £100,000 – will, however, miss out on this financial relief.
