Scottish Brewery Trials Gluten-Free Barley

Edinburgh-based Bellfield Brewery is the first UK brewery to trial a new gluten-free barley from Australia.

Kebari barley has been developed to provide a beer solution for sufferers of coeliac disease and, if successful, will enable more brewers to produce gluten-free beers without resorting to the use of alternative cereals or the addition of gluten-lowering enzymes. The new barley has taken thirteen years to reach the production stage.

Bellfield already produces two gluten-free beers, Bohemian Pilsner and Lawless Village IPA.

In a separate development, Carlsberg UK has added two gluten-free Czech lagers – Zatec’s Celia Organic and Celia Dark – to its beer portfolio.
