CAMRA and Co-op Agree on Pubs

Print
News: January 2016

The Campaign for Real Ale and the supermarket chain Co-op have jointly agreed a set of principles to safeguard the future of pubs.

The agreement sets out to highlight the importance of retaining successful community pubs but also recognises that some locals close because of poor trading and cannot be retained in pub use.

The Co-op has stated that it will adhere to a number of principles when considering converting a pub to supermarket use.

These include only developing pub sites using the planning permission process, rather than relying on permitted development rights; continuing to individually assess each trading pub to gauge the pub’s social value prior to converting it into a convenience store; and not standing in the way of any group seeking to acquire and run a community pub.
